"if the presidential election were held today, for whom would you vote"? this poll shows obama at 49.7%, romney at 47.3%. the mitt romney first debate bounce has disappeared, though the survey shows that the mitt romney backers are far more energy -- energized about him. in "the washington post" they write -- "it all co

romney with a slight edge leading the president 48 to 47%. joining us now, drucker the associate politics editor at "roll call." the president is out now touting his economic plans for the second term in this glossy new brochure that i guess will get mailed to several million households. why now, david? >> well, the president's taken a lot of flak from his own supporters, people in his own party, for not presenting a brand new second term agenda. in other words, proposals that, maybe some proposals left over from the first term that he didn't complete but things that are completely brand new. i'm actually surprised he someti predicted and i was wrong. the president has offered new goals but he hasn't offered really new programs. and i think that the campaign must have felt that that idea was hurting him with voters. so i think they're trying to move to correct it. jon: there was a quote this morning on the political website, "politico", that i want toe share with you and get reaction to it. glen thrush says everything was going well for barack obama until 9:04 on october 3rd. when mitt ro

. this hour we'll hear from mitt romney. he will speak to supporters in reno, nevada, before jetting off to iowa for a speech tonight in cedar rapids. president obama was first on the trail this morning in davenport, iowa. and take a look at this. before the day is over, he'll have appeared in four states, in addition to iowa. he's got stops in colorado, nevada, plus "the tonight show" taping in southern california. here is the president ticking off some of his achievements at stop number one today. >> i said i'd bet on american workers and american ingenuity and while the other guy was saying let detroit go bankrupt, i went in there and worked with them, the workers and the management, and we saved a dying auto industry that is back on top of the world. on issue after issue we are moving forward. after losing 9 million jobs in the great recession, our businesses have now added more than 5 million new jobs over the past 2 1/2 years. manufacturing is at its highest level since the '90s. unemployment has fallen to its lowest level since i took office. home values and home sales are rising.

three national interviews on his slate. governor mitt romney is hoping to get a little national attention of his own. he is ramping up for a all-out push for iowa for what his campaign is calling a significant economic address. we expect that this afternoon in the city of ames. that is before moving on to ohio for an event this evening with running mate, congressman paul ryan. jon: as we get closer to election day there are lots of questions right now about the impact of president obama's bad october is having on democrats around the country in other races. take a look at the balance of power in the house right now. republicans hold the majority, 240 seats, to democrats 190. there are five vacant seats right now. let's talk about it with shane deapril of campaigns and elections magazine. he is the editor. shane, democrats have talked like they would be able to recapture the house, maybe put nancy pelosi back in place as speaker of the house. how is that looking right now after the month the president obama has had? >> yeah right now, jon, it doesn't look good in terms of democra
